Hi, I’m Ms Alison and I’ve been teaching the piano for over 15 years.
I started learning the piano when I was 7 years old. I continue my piano learning and certification, and started teaching part-time in a music school at 17 years old.
At that time I was an undergraduate studying IT in university. My parents wished I could further my music studies in UK, but I have more ambitious thoughts. I wanted to explore more of the outside world.
I still remember I sought the advice of my brother “what is a subject that is related to keyboard and alphabets, yet you don’t have to study too much”. He told me – “go study computer’.
So I did. I studied and graduated with a degree in IT in UK.
After graduation, I began work as an IT Professional, but I still have deep passion in music. Hence, I work full-time in IT, while teaching piano on weekends. For a couple of times, I wanted to quit IT to go into full-time piano teaching, but I’m always excited by new opportunities in the IT sector.
After settling down and having my own family, music and teaching is still my passion. But this time, I have decided to let myself explore different perspectives of the music industry, and not just teaching.
I attended more piano events and make more friends in the music industry.
I had piano lessons with Ms Julie Tan, and she gave me a new understanding of piano teaching and pedagogy.
I had a learning trip to Budapest and Oxford University, London with a group of piano friends, and this allowed me to explore different types of music teaching and interaction, in a fun way.
I’m also currently working on my Diploma certification under Mr Rickie Oui, and learning Hungarian method with him too.
All the these knowledge and experiences I’ve gained shape me how I conduct my own piano lessons for my kids and adult students.
I believe there’s so much more about music than just exams. Music plays an important role in a child’s growing up years, and learning a skill for their future.
Music shouldn’t be boring. It should be interactive! Hence I always love to make my lessons fun and interactive, with the students and their parents as well.
The students who learn with me get to learn and play songs they love, and even compose their own pieces (and not just able to play 3 exam pieces each year).
As the world is changing and moving fast, I believe music teaching has to evolve as well. I always believe that every child and adult should have the pride to enjoy music through different teaching pedagogy.
The vision I have for my student? To create a fun and interactive learning environment for everyone to learn music, so that playing piano becomes a lifelong skill for enjoyment.
