Hi! My name is Berlin. Let me share with you a bit more about my music background.
I first started piano when I was 5 but a year later, I stopped learning. However, I find myself still having a liking to music and singing. Thus, I picked up the classical guitar for a few years and joined school choirs and professional choirs and choruses for many years.
Over the course of my studies, I grew more and more interested in piano and thus, I began learning the piano during my teenage years. After many grueling practices and hard work, I have achieved a good amount of foundation and skill set that allowed me to achieve my Grade 8 in piano as well as theory.
After my O levels, I enrolled into Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), and graduated with a Diploma in Music, majoring in Performance. The 3 years of music studies equipped me with many in-depth knowledge of music that are invaluable, which later helped me in many areas of my music teaching.
It is also during my NAFA days where I was exposed to teaching group music classes in schools as well.
I first started my teaching journey back in 2014 and have enjoyed every single teaching process and am always filled with awe and gratitude seeing my students grow in both skills and also as an individual.
Many are young children who experienced music and piano for the first time, while some are talented kids who wish to pursue piano further with private lessons. Seeing every child you teach fall in love with music, is the best reward any teacher can ever have.
As my student base grew, I also create opportunities for my students to perform, by partnering with my other teacher friends to hold a concert for them, and also organize one myself too.
I believe learning piano should not just be exam or grading-focused. Yes, I do prepare students for exams, and most of them do quite well too! But too much exam pieces or drilling may make the whole learning journey unpleasant and boring. Learning should be fun, right? 🙂
Mini-concerts like these provide an opportunity for students to perform, and also observe how their peers perform as well. The students’ music performances are not meant to impress others, but to showcase their learnings, their hard work, the effort they have put in, for their loved ones who supported them in their journey.
I’m glad to be able to make a difference to all my students so far.
Here’s my personal motto that keeps my passion going,
“Teaching is more than methods and techniques, it is about making a difference.”
“When Estee started to switch from group lesson in yamaha to individual lesson, it is not easy for her to adapt new method in ABRSM n sight reading. Being her weakest in sight reading, now she is getting so much better in sight reading and soon be ready for grade 1 theory exam in 2018! “
Hi Teacher Berlin! Thank you for being a fun loving, dedicated and patient teacher. When Estee started to switch from group lesson in yamaha to individual lesson, it is not easy for her to adapt new method in ABRSM n sight reading.
