About

Leonard is a dedicated and passionate piano teacher who believes that no two students learn the same way. He tailors his approach to each individual, adjusting techniques, repertoire, and pace depending on the student’s learning style, strengths, and personality. Some students thrive with visual explanations and storytelling, others respond best through guided discovery or technical drills. Leonard pays close attention to how each student responds and adapts accordingly, making lessons engaging, productive, and always suited to the learner. Whether it’s preparing for graded exams, playing for leisure, or exploring creative expression through improvisation or composition, Leonard makes sure the lessons remain meaningful and enjoyable.

Born and raised in Singapore, Leonard (also known as Pianist7137 online) began his piano journey as a child, but it wasn’t until he was 13 that music truly captured his heart. It was a gift from his grandmother; Maksim Mrvica’s album The Piano Player, that changed everything. The powerful and expressive playing in that album sparked a newfound passion that would shape the rest of his life.

At that time, Leonard was studying under Ms Winnie Tsin. Later, under the guidance of Kannie Kee, he earned first prize at Emmanuel Music School’s “Musical Cheers” competition and received a silver award at the Singapore Music Teachers Association’s second Performers’ Festival in 2008.

Leonard continued to grow musically, learning from respected teachers such as Russian pianist Boris Kraljevic and Frank Demeglio, and attending masterclasses with artists including Toh Chee Hung, Dennis Lee, Ng Chong Lim, and Yaron Kohlberg.

He holds a degree in Classical Piano Performance from LASALLE College of the Arts and a diploma from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. Aside from solo playing, Leonard has strong experience in piano ensembles, both in duos (2 pianos) and duets (1 piano, 4 hands), and enjoys the collaborative side of making music.

Outside of teaching and performing, Leonard is also a freestyle skater and spends his free time transcribing music for solo piano. These small arrangements are shared on his YouTube channel and have become well-loved by his viewers.

Leonard teaches from his home studio in Upper Changi, just steps away from the MRT station, a quiet and comfortable space ideal for focused learning. For those who prefer the convenience of learning at home, he also offers lessons at students’ own locations upon request. He teaches students of all ages and levels, whether you’re a complete beginner, working towards graded exams, or simply want to explore the joy of playing music at your own pace.

STUDENT SUCCESS STORIES

Hong Jun

Grade 4: Merit • Grade 5: Distinction
When I first met Hong Jun, he had just come off a setback—having not passed his Grade 3 piano exam. With some encouragement, a structured and tailored teaching approach, and most importantly, his own determination and consistent practice, he made a strong comeback. Under my guidance, he achieved a Merit in Grade 4 and went on to score a Distinction in Grade 5.

A testament to what focused effort, the right mentorship, and a love for music can achieve.

Kayden came to me full of energy; cheeky, mischievous, and with an attention span that lasted about as long as a single scale! But with time, patience, and lessons tailored to keep him engaged (including plenty of his favourite pop songs), he found his rhythm. He scored a Distinction in his Grade 1 piano exam and made it to the semi-finals of the Happy Music Festival 2022. His passion for music continues to shine through in every performance.

JUNYI

Junyi is bursting with energy and has a fun, lively personality that fills the room. Students like him can be a challenge to manage at times, but with a good dose of patience, playfulness, and structured guidance, he picked up the basics quickly; and even started learning to play independently. It’s been a joy watching his confidence grow!

Beginner Duet with Junyi

Junhan

Grade 1: Distinction • Advanced Repertoire

Long before even taking his Grade 1 piano exam, Junhan set his sights on learning Für Elise; a piece that many students only attempt much later in their musical journey. It wasn’t an easy road, but through sheer determination, consistent practice, and a real love for the instrument, he pulled it off beautifully.

This is no small feat! Für Elise demands strong technical control, musical sensitivity, and maturity well beyond beginner level. What Junhan achieved is something not many can do at this stage, and it’s a clear reflection of what hard work and the right guidance can bring out in a student.

He later went on to earn a Distinction in his Grade 1 exam. A well-deserved recognition of the progress he made and the dedication he continues to show!

Beyond the exam syllabus, I also introduced Junhan to the world of improvisation, teaching him how chords, harmony, and melody work together to create music that’s not just played, but felt.

In his performance of River Flows in You, he includes a beautiful section that isn’t found in the original score. It’s his own variation, a personal touch that shows not only creativity, but also a deeper understanding of harmony and the freedom that comes with it. Moments like these are what make music come alive, and it’s been a joy to watch him explore and express himself this way.
